Frequently Asked Questions about Membership
Q. How many members are in the club?
A. The club typically ranges from 12 to 14 members. Currently, the maximum number of members is limited to sixteen.
Q. What is the cost?
A. The annual membership fee is based on the estimated cost of operating our boats and the anticipated number of members for the upcoming year. Currently, the annual fee is $1600.
Q. Can I join for only one year?
A. Absolutely. Membership fees are accessed at our annual Spring membership meeting, usually in late March or early April. While we hope and prefer that people continue as members from year to year, we certainly understand that changes in circumstances and job requirements may preclude this. There are no contractual requirements in joining, although members do agree to abide by the club Operating Agreements.
Q. If I join later in the year is there a discount on membership?
A. Typically, the membership fee is discounted for new members joining after Labor Day.
Q. How much sailing experience do I need to have?
A. We do ask that you have some sailing experience. Although we do not have a formal program of instruction, most of our members are happy to have other members aboard as crew, and this presents novice sailors with a great opportunity to hone their skills and acquire confidence in taking out a boat on their own.
Q. How do I get certified as a skipper?
A. Skippers are members who have demonstrated that they are fully responsible for the safe and prudent operation of the boat and for the safety and welfare of all individuals aboard. For new members this can be easily accomplished by arranging a demonstration sail with any member who has been designated to perform this certification.
Q. What are my responsibilities as a member?
A. Membership responsibilities are spelled out in the Operating Agreements document found under the About MASA tab. The purpose of these rules, which have been proposed and revised by members over the years, is to ensure the safe operation, proper maintenance and fair use of our boats.
